Day 3, A song that makes you happy

"Hello, Hooray" ~ Alice Cooper

Alice with Pamela Des Barres, another hero of mine.

His alter ego's stagename turned out to be fairly appropriate;

Named after a Ouija board session with the original Alice Cooper, a 17th century witch, he has spent much of his career resisting a constant torch-burning procession of 'mothers of prevention' trying to hound him offstage.

The softly spoken godfather of Shock Rock is known for among other things biting the head off a live chicken (myth), hanging himself on stage, his penchant for golf, and an extensive knowledge of the history of Milwaulkee (Wayne's World cameo).

An alcoholic in recovery he has extended his support to his own support acts to help them steer themselves away from drink and drug abuse.

He's a conundrum, he's a freak, he's a hero.

And this song is a rousing anthem for all the freaks and oddballs he drags along in his wake, chanting 'we are not worthy'.

It tells you- be who you want to be, wear leather and studs, hang out with constrictors, drink blood from a chicken's neck [Alice didn't do it but fuck it- do it anyway!]... and don't let anybody tell you that it's not ok!

Alice Cooper currently presents a weekly show on Planet Rock Radio, and believes that the secret to a long and happy marriage is to make sure to continue going on dates.

Day 2, Your Least Favourite Song

Ahhhh this is equally tough.

It can't be something which is universally accepted as shit... because that's about as much fun as kicking a puppy / James Blunt.
Incidentally when i googled most popular funeral songs (brilliant source of self indulgent, nauseating tripe) James Blunt was top of the pops with 'Goodbye my Lover'

Heinous.

And yet... SO......

Secondly I thought - Radiohead! An excellent choice i reckon. My LEASTEST favourite for the simple reason that they are universally loved and frothed about (and credit where its due they do have some absolute belters) ........ but why so much adulation when it seems like you're basically swishing your arm round for diamonds in a giant cauldron of pale, mucussy, interminable wailings and screeching strings..... drums which dont seem to go with the rest of the (loosely termed) 'arrangement'....

"the Devil whispered behind the leaves, "It's pretty, but is it Art?"

Art this may be. But pretty it aint.

However I am so entirely lethargic about the entire idea of Radiohead that I couldn't even summon up the interest to actually think of one of their songs as an example.

So todays winner is:

Coldplay - Fix You.

Embarrasing. Cringeable. Eyes closed. Beige. Baldy.... dad-pop. KEEP YOUR EMBARRASSING OUTPOURINGS OF EMOTION INSIDE YOUR BIG YELLOW HEAD Martin.

To burglarize an NME expression 'dolefully drippy piss'

A man singing a lovelorn ballad should look like this:

in fact thinking about it.... everyone should look like this.

~*~*Every time I look at Jeff Bridges i get a little giddy. I think its a result of all my brain blood taking a little excited holiday to my ovaries*~*~

Day 1: your favourite song

I dont't think anyone who actually likes music could even begin to try to answer this question with one single song........

If you think about the book High Fidelity, i reckon those guys had it right - exhaustive finicky list making. that's where the party's at.

To pick a favourite song you need to have the goalposts moved so tight that the options are at least cut down to a reasonable amount=

i.e.

* favourite song by a band with three members

* favourite song by someone who died in an accident

* favourite song with a 3 word title,

and even then you need a top 5 list. Or a hoard of small animals painted with the appropriate album artwork to battle to the death for each song's honour.

But forced to choose 1... THIS WEEK. It has to be

Lorraine Ellison: Stay with Me.

Look up 'passionate delivery' in the dictionary, then stand back while Lorraine's rediculous voice piles out and slams right into you like a freight train.

You can appreciate the lyrics if you've ever been betrayed. If you're angry you can feel the seething enunciation swell up inside you, when you're defeated it'll lift you back on your feet.

You can scream it into a spoon over a saucepan, you can yell it from the windows of a moving car. You can sway drunkenly and throw your arms round someone and shout it into eachothers faces.

Either way, it will never fail to leave you breathless.

the most upsetting thing of all is we were actually singing 'it wasn't me' by Shaggy when this photograph was taken.

Post Breakup sex

Today I am mostly wondering what exactly The Vaccines' Post Breakup Sex is supposed to mean..?

Thinking about it... I'm not so sure I care. What's not to love about a song that just repeats the words ' Post Breakup Sex ' over and over again in a weird robotic / Ian Curtis ripoff voice.

Most people I speak to seem disgusted that i like it at all... But i must respectfully request that these h@erz take their sniding and snooting elsewhere,

sure the lyrics are incredibly simple, virtually a nursery rhyme - by a groaning manboy with angst in his pants...

but 'love, love me do, you know i love you, i'll always be true........' ???

My favourite part is the desperation in the delivery of

'maybe i misunderstood - but i cant believe you're feeling good'

My personal favourite ever post breakup sex was a guy who pulled me by sticking his tongue down my bra in public, took me home and made me a mojito, stayed up talking til it got light.. then never spoke to me again.

The new chivalry.
